Why Can Even Dreams From God Be So Confusing?

Why Can Even Dreams From God Be So Confusing?

Dear Reader, are you confused by your Dreams? Not to worry! Almost everyone was, except for Moses.

“Hear now My words!” He said. “When there is a prophet of Adonai, I reveal Myself in a vision, I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses. In all My house, he is faithful. I speak with him face to face, plainly and not in riddles. He even looks at the form of Adonai! Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?”

The Numbering Chapter 12 Verse 6

Tree Of Life Version

A Dream is often called a "Night Parable". It is simply a symbolic language that is spoken between the Supernatural World and the Natural World while a human being is sleeping. Jesus (Rabbi Yeshua) spoke to the crowds of His day in this language while they were awake, and He spoke to kings and rulers such as Pharoah and Nebuchadnezzar while they slept (Proverbs 13).

In both day and night parables, the meaning was only understood with the help of the Holy Spirit.

So we see that one reason is God hiding the matter for a Kingdom of Priests in His Royal Services to search it out (Proverbs Chapter 25). He wanted the meaning to only be understood by His People.

He could also want to spend quality time with the Dreamer while they search the meaning. This would be much like a grandfather putting a puzzle together with a grandchild on a Saturday afternoon. Since around 1/3 of our lives are experienced asleep there are decades in which The Creator can begin a conversation with us. One that our intellect with it's questions and our emotions with their demands, will not interfere with focusing on the message. We are simply left with the start of a message when we wake that we must spend our waking time pursuing. The Creator is of course the only one with the missing pieces and it is Him we must seek for Answers.

Another reason is that the dream is not meant to be fully understood until 'an appointed time" (just as the Prophet Daniel and John the Revelator experienced in the dreams they had and interpreted).

At other times, our Spirit has understanding of a Dream and will recognize the meaning "at the appointed time". But the dream will remain a mystery to the Soul (mind, will and emotions).

So what can or should we do moving forward? I would recommend humbly accepting that we won't know or understand everything. The Apostle Paul wrote about the limitations of personal revelation in the Epistles to the Church in Corinth. It was a great reminder that we need to focus on Fruit instead of Future-Telling.

"For we know in part
and we prophesy in part;
but when that which is perfect has come,
then that which is partial will pass away.

 When I was a child,

    I spoke like a child,
    I thought like a child,
    I reasoned like a child.
When I became a man,
    I put away childish things.

For now we see in a mirror dimly,
    but then face to face.
Now I know in part,
but then I will know fully,
even as I have been fully known.

But now these three remain—
    faith, hope, and love.
And the greatest of these is love."

Animals in My Dream?

What do these Animals in my Dream mean?

Dear Dreamer, If you often dream of animals that aren't acting like animals.
First, don't panic. You aren't going crazy!

This is actually very, very common. Most everyone dreams of animals and they often aren't acting like animals at all. That's because they represent people in your life or spiritual forces that are at play or characteristics the animal shares with people. Have a dog that is crippled in your dream? It may be a friend that is powerless to help you. How about a cat that gets injured through its curiosity at a certain bookstore? Maybe there are certain forms of knowledge that aren't in your best interest to discover. As Jesus (Rabbi Yeshua) warned the Church at Thyatira about.

The clearest meaning of animals in dreams is their usage in Scripture. As these
Biblical References were meant to resonate throughout time and the Written Words of The Creator go together with the Whispered Words of The Creator.

Three good examples are the ant, the fox, and the cow.

We see from Proverbs that the ant represents being hardworking and someone that both plans and saves and who works well in a team. It is even chapter 6 of verse 6, with 6 being the numbers of matters concerning human affairs.

"Go to the ant, you slacker- consider it's ways and be wise!
It has no overseer or ruler, no commander. Yet it prepares its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest"
The Proverbs of Solomon Chapter 6 Verse 6

We see that the fox may be small but gathered together they can do great harm. It is also a term for a cunning person (like a coyote would be in the Americas).
And the cow is a symbol of work and economy and financial plenty from Egypt to most every other culture of the world.

"Catch the foxes for us— the little foxes that ruin the vineyards,
for our vineyards are in blossom."

Song Of Songs Chapter 2 Verse 15

Animals are often known for certain traits they possess. The crocodile that attacks others with it's mouth (often by surprise), the dog that is known for it's loyalty, the cat known for an independent attitude. We could also look at the turtle that is both protected and hindered by it's thick shell and the chameleon that becomes someone else when the audience changes. Similarly rabbits are known for moving quickly and for reproducing quickly and eagles are known for their vision (in the scientific and spiritual sense both).

Animals in dreams outside of Scripture, and even in Scripture, aren't always universal in meaning however. Just like with other dream elements, context and prayer are both key. The Scripture is an amazing launching point but God doesn't live and speaks only in our brain boxes.

Dreams are a language in which The Creator ultimately speaks to people individually. So the meaning of an animal can vary from person to person, and also culture to culture and differ across periods of History. The experience one individual has with a monkey may be an amusing childhood memory while it could be a source of lifelong trauma for someone that was attacked by the same animal. The Biblical usage of an animal can also change in different chapters.

Diving deeper into how animals changing in symbolism from culture to culture. In Native American legend the serpent is known for it's wisdom and ability to impart knowledge in a positive light. In Christendom the serpent is known for the same but in the form of Gnosis (secret and forbidden knowledge) that is harmful not beneficial. Just as the ancient dragon (dinosaur is the modern term) was a positive symbol of wisdom and fortune and protection in Asia and Eastern Europe. It was on the contrary, a symbol of destruction in Western Europe and the Mediterranean (Leviathan, Kraken, Hydra, etc.).

Some animals like the coyote may have one meaning in a time period but different meaning later in the same place. In Native American Cultures of the Southwest a coyote was always the trickster or shapeshifting creature that was very crafty, like Loki to the Vikings. Now a coyote is a slang term for a human trafficker, often used in the Hispanic and Law Enforcement communities.
Dogs are unclean in Middle Eastern Countries and are never pets, but in America they are "man's best friend". Cats in the modern era are cute house pets but in Colonial America they were symbols of witchcraft and scorned despite being worshipped by the ancient Egyptians.

If you dream of a blackbird, the meaning could greatly depend on your background. The crow was a symbol of death to the Celts and the Norse but the raven was a symbol of the Great Spirit to the Cherokee. Yet in American English when someone is corrected we say they are "eating crow."

Which leads us to a fun and amusing aspect of animals in dreams, the play on words that are often used. The Hebrew Scriptures are full of play on words in Hebrew, just like in English. Let's look at a few amusing examples from other dream interpreters.

If we encounter a seal in a dream, has a deal been sealed?  Does the owl see in the dark to know "who is who?". Did a tragic event leave someone "whaling"? Are we about to borrow money from someone known to be a "loan shark"?  If you come upon a dolphin in a dream are you actually "finding your porpoise?"

The name of the animal is often most relevant when the animal is merely present or seen. But when the animal is doing something out of it's character, like the example John Paul Jackson used of a dog driving a dreamer's car, then it's implying that the animal represents a person or a period in time. In the dream that was submitted to his ministry, the dreamer's best friend was steering them (another play on words) or controlling the dreamer's decisions. In Pharoah's Dream we see cows devouring each other, meaning the plenty of one economy would be devoured by the scarcity of another.

That had to be disturbing!

"Then the ugly emaciated cows ate the seven good-looking beefy cows—
and Pharaoh woke up."

Genesis (In The Beginning) Chapter 41 Verse 4

Was My Dream From God?

Dear Dreamer,

Have you ever woken up from a dream and wondered if what you saw and experienced was from The Creator or just from your own imagination? Many of us have had that experience.

Thankfully The Creator hasn't left us in the dark about dreams!

"I will bless Adonai, who counsels me.
Even at night my heart instructs me."

Psalm Of King David Chapter 16 Verse 7

What Simple Steps Can We Take To Discern A Dream?

1. Know The Written Word (Read the Scriptures

2. Become Familiar with the Rhema Word (Listen for the Spirit)

3. Petition (Ask in Prayer)

4. Worship (While you Wait)

5. Fast (Away from Distractions)

5. Seek (Wise Counsel)

6. Notice (Patterns in Messages)

7. Look for (Scripture)

Let's look at these steps in detail.

We see many levels of understanding a dream or any spiritual experience discovered by the prophets and kings and others.

As the Scripture says of their lives, these are "there for our instruction".

"For whatever was written before was written for our instruction, so that through patience and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."

Letter To The Romans Chapter 15 Verse 4

One of the first indicators that a dream is from The Creator is the "weight",

also called the heaviness or "Kavod" of the dream. The dream was meant to add weight to one side of the scales in our decision making. Just as the well-being of our parents is to be taken into consideration when making decisions. This is how we "honor our parents" and also honor a Divine Revelation.

When Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Joseph husband of Mary, Pilate's wife, and even the Apostle Paul had a dream from The Creator that dream had weight to it. The dream wasn't an experience they could simply shake off or forget about by dinner the next day.

Pharoah and Nebuchadnezzar were both so burdened by their dreams that they threatened the lives of their top advisors in an effort to find understanding and also relief from the weight of it. They even became desperate enough to seek spiritual wisdom from those they despised in the natural.

As an act of mercy perhaps, the Dream Giver gave these dreams to rulers who served other elohim. And as an act of mercy for the people under their rule, He provided someone in covenant as an interpreter. In this way, interpreters such as Joseph and Daniel brought Good News and served to bring light to the nations. Dreams were used to saved the lives of those dwelling in darkness and perhaps many of their souls as well.

When God gave dreams to the Patriarchs like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob it changed the destiny of not only individuals and families of the time, but also entire nations not yet born. These dreams were told and retold for generations to come as they were testaments or a testimony of their walk with God.

When God gave a dream to Joseph, it compelled him move to Egypt that very night, just in time to save the life of baby Jesus (Yeshua). When God gave a dream to the Apostle Paul it was for the salvation for the homeland of Alexander the Great (the land of Macedonia) (Acts 16) and it rerouted Paul's mission trip that he had planned for the next day.

So yes, some dreams from God do carry a sense of urgency.

We should be careful to note, however, that these were believers in Covenant and their families were in Covenant. Their lives were those of continual prayer, worship, fasting and study of the Word as they had it at the time. They continually walked in close relationship with The Creator and with others who knew Him.  They walked with those who bore good fruit which was witnessed in person on a daily basis and their lives were centered on Covenant with The Creator. They already knew with certainty His Voice in so many areas of life before making life-changing decisions based upon a dream.

Even in times of urgency, prayer was still involved in all of these decisions. Both Daniel and his Levite friends were going to lose their lives in Babylon if he could not interpret the dreams of the king. Yet Daniel still sought fasting and prayer instead of making a guess.

Even with fasting and praying, Daniel understood only some of the dream. As he never knew in his lifetime all the details of the coming empires that would replace Babylon.

Fasting and praying were methods of not only removing distractions in life but also of acknowledging that interpretation ultimately comes from The Creator and not the dreamer.

"These words, which I am commanding you today, are to be on your heart.

You are to teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up.

Bind them as a sign on your hand, they are to be as frontlets between your eyes and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Deuteronomy Chapter 6 Verse 6

We also know a dream is from The Creator when it is in alignment with His Character and His Covenant. The Creator has revealed both in His Written Word (Logos) and the Whispered Word (Rhema) will never stand in opposition to the Written Word.

There are times in which He may be speaking in symbolic language ("eat My Flesh and drink My Blood") that we may not understand. For example, many times in a dream someone dies, but this does not mean their physical death (Nekros in Greek), rather more their death spiritually or the death of that relationship (Thanatos in Greek). There are also times when our understanding of God needs to be corrected, as some forget about His Justice while others forget about His Mercy. The meaning of the dream however will never stand in opposition to who He is and what He is about in Scripture.

Being unstudied in the Written Word allows a lot of room to misunderstand not only a dream but also a message from God in any form. (2nd Peter Chapter 3). It also allows us to be misled by those claiming to speak for The Creator that are actually only speaking for themselves or for The Destroyer.

Dreams from God usually include Scripture directly or have a key to understanding within Scripture. Most symbols we see in a dream link back to the Bible and can easily be found with a Word Search on a site like http://www.biblegateway.com or http://www.biblegateway.com . God responds to and speaks through His own Word (symbolized by Bread or a Sword usually) instead of the words of man.

Dreams from The Creator (The Light of the World) are also often marked by brilliant color. Colors are simply reflections of light, and The Creator spoke through the ephod which held twelve reflective stones as does the New Jerusalem. Each of these stones were for a different tribe of Israel, each with their own personalities and traits and missions in the world.  He also spoke through the Umim and the Thumim and the service of the priests were illuminated by the seven branches of the Menorah. So, we see that God often speaks through "highlighting" and through illuminated colors.

As we age, we lose the rods and cones in our eyes that let us experience brightness the way that children enjoy. There is also much of the spectrum of light and the ranges of sounds that humans simply cannot experience in corrupted bodies. But we are not held by those limitations in dreams, nor will we be in the Kingdom to come.

"But as it is written, “Things no eye has seen and no ear has heard, that have not entered the heart of mankind— these things God has prepared for those who love Him.”

1st Letter to the Corinthians Chapter 2 Verse 9

We see from The Creator appearing to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob with a recurring message that a dream from The Creator is usually a continuation of what He has already been saying by other methods. Sometimes the message has been repeating to an individual but sometimes to the same family or congregation or city over a length of time. These dreams serve as an encouragement and a reminder and sometimes a desperate last plea for repentance or obedience.

In the Epistles we see those like Paul being given a dream that reinforces the Great Commission (a general instruction) but with more detail to a certain person or even to a community (like the Letters to the 7 Churches of Revelation).

Speaking of Community, this is often one of the most untapped resources we have in discerning spiritual matters. We can't just ask anyone, however. Consulting those who meet the qualifications of a Deacon or Deaconess in the Epistles (Letters to the Churches) is the best place to start.

We must also be careful to avoid seeking counsel from those who are unqualified. Examples would include anyone that would fit the definition of a "fool" (morally bankrupt and impulsive person) in Proverbs. Also, anyone that consults a spirit that isn't the Holy Spirit.

Such as King Saul who found out the hard way in Endor!

We have to seek wisdom and not friendship in choosing our advisors (this particular mistake by Solomon's son split the entire nation in half for centuries), as we see in 1st Kings 12.

We also have to seek to understand and not seek to discover a guarantee of our own desires being met. This was the fatal error of the dreaming prophets in the time of Jeremiah.

"Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams,” declares Adonai, “and tell them, and so lead My people astray with their lies and with their reckless boasts. Yet I never sent them or commanded them. Nor do they benefit this people at all.” It is a declaration of Adonai."

The Prophet Jeremiah Chapter 23 Verse 32

God (The King of the Universe) cannot be kept in a box! Unless He built the box Himself, While He never violates His own character or His own Word. He will break out of our formulas from time to time. For example, while God often uses brilliant colors and is the Light of the World, He also appeared to Abraham in a terrifying darkness.

While He is the Author of Peace, He can show us events and outcomes that will shake us out of our complacency.

Even in these dreams though, He usually ends with hope and a promise

and a way of escape.

Dreams from The Creator may warn us of dark times ahead

but they won't leave us in the dark forever.
